{"id":176,"date":"2011-02-25T16:38:56","date_gmt":"2011-02-25T16:38:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/heffrey.com\/blog\/?page_id=176"},"modified":"2011-08-22T10:08:07","modified_gmt":"2011-08-22T17:08:07","slug":"experiments","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.happycapsule.com\/blog\/experiments\/","title":{"rendered":"Experiments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The HAPPy capsule has a 650 gram experimental payload capacity and is taking several experiments along for the stratospheric ride!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Experiment 001 &#8211; San Marcos High<\/strong> (Santa Barbara, CA)<br \/>\nMarshmallow Experiment<br \/>\n<strong>Purpose<\/strong> &#8211; To see what happens to a marshmallow at 100,000 feet elevation.<br \/>\n<strong>Hypothesis<\/strong> &#8211; The marshmallow will expand in the near vacuum that is found in near space. There is some debate whether the very cold temperature (up to -60\u00b0F ) will freeze the marshmallow and stop the expansion due to low pressure.<br \/>\n<strong>Procedure<\/strong> &#8211; Attach a marshmallow to the onto the top of the capsule and use a GoPro video camera (also on top of the cooler) to video what happens during the flight.<br \/>\n<strong>Scientists<\/strong> &#8211; Je Ella Bennet, Dakota Wolf, Stefano Gonzagui.<br \/>\n<strong>Result<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VEiO20YEI2Q\">Watch the video<\/a> to see for yourself \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><strong>Experiment 002 &#8211; San Marcos High<\/strong> (Santa Barbara, CA)<br \/>\nTwinkie Experiment<br \/>\n<strong>Purpose<\/strong> &#8211; To see what happens to a Twinkie in a near vacuum at almost 20 miles above the earth.<br \/>\n<strong>Hypothesis<\/strong> &#8211; Time has no impact on a Twinkie and neither will low pressure.<br \/>\n<strong>Procedure<\/strong> &#8211; Attach a Twinkie to the onto the top of the HAPPy capsule and use a GoPro video camera (also on top of the cooler) to video what happens during the flight.<br \/>\n<strong>Scientists<\/strong> &#8211; Daniel Mendez, Byron Elton.<br \/>\n<strong>Result<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VEiO20YEI2Q\">Watch the video<\/a> to see for yourself \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><strong>Experiment 003<\/strong><br \/>\nTemperature Experiment<br \/>\n<strong>Purpose<\/strong> &#8211; To determine whether a lack of air impacts heat dissipation.<br \/>\n<strong>Hypothesis<\/strong> &#8211; Devices that generate their own temperature get hotter in a near vacuum because the heat does not have a medium to disperse into.<br \/>\n<strong>Procedure<\/strong> &#8211; Measure the temperature of the Canon G9 CCD sensor every 15 seconds using CHDK and log the info to a file.  Also measure the temperature of the environment outside the capsule.
